1 Place the needle through a stitch at the right edge (Figure 29).
Figure 29: Insert needle into edge
2 Wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit and pull the loop through the garment (Figure 30). You’ve made a new stitch that will stay on the needle in your right hand.
Figure 30: Make the stitch
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until the correct number of stitches has been picked up and knitted.
However, it’s where you pick up and knit that’s crucial. Every stitch pattern creates a different combination of edge stitches. Rule: Unless the directions tell you otherwise, pick up and knit stitches with the right side of the work facing you.
To pick up and knit on a horizontal edge, where your new stitches will face in the same direction as the old ones, insert the right needle into the middle of a stitch on the row below the bound-off or above the cast-on edge, as illustrated above.
To pick up and knit on a vertical edge, where your new stitches will be perpendicular to the old ones, look carefully at the edge of the fabric. Some patterns specify slipping the first stitch of every row, which makes a smooth edge that looks like a braid (Figure 31).
